Our activities are focussed on both applied and fundamental
topics of condensed matter theory and material research
which revolve around our two large-scale experimental facilities
SINQ
(spallation neutron source), see also
LNS (Laboratory for Neutron Scattering) and
SLS (Swiss (synchrotron) Light Source)
as well as the
LMN (Laboratory for Micro- and Nanostructures).
Our interests include the Quantum Hall effect, density functional
theory, strongly correlated systems and low-dimensional magnetism
including macroscopic quantum effects.
More specifically we have recently studied spin polarized
states in the fractional quantum Hall regime, relativistic
effects on bonding, connections between Berry phases and
topological spin excitations in one and two dimensions, as
well as resonance enhanced magnetic x-ray scattering. On
the more applied side we have investigated photovoltaic
systems, cages in zeolites, superparamagnetism in nanowires and
magnetic correlations in nanostructured materials.
